Have you ever caught yourself in a loop of bad habits, knowing they stand in the way of your happiness?
For me, it started with biting my nails. When I finally broke that habit, I found myself grinding my teeth at night. As if that wasn’t enough, I’ve always been great at procrastinating, putting off anything that feels less interesting.
Each one of these habits has held me back from fully enjoying life and feeling confident in myself. And after years of this cycle, I realised I had to take control.
To break free from nail-biting, I started painting my nails regularly. The simple act of seeing them neat and polished was enough to keep me from biting them. Then came the teeth grinding - something I didn’t even realise I was doing until I woke up with toothache and headaches. Now, I wear a mouthguard at night and when I'm concentrating, which has made a world of difference.
Finally, my procrastination tendencies needed more than a quick fix. I’ve found that stepping outside for a walk helps clear my mind, allowing me to tackle those tasks I’ve been putting off with renewed focus.
Breaking these habits has had a huge impact on my happiness and productivity. But it wasn’t until I drew a parallel between my personal bad habits and the way businesses approach information security that I really had an epiphany.
Just like personal habits, bad security practices can creep in and undermine your efforts. Maybe you put off updating passwords or fail to enforce strong security policies because it feels tedious. Or perhaps your business has become so used to a certain way of doing things that small risks go unnoticed. It’s easy to procrastinate on security measures, but doing so can leave your business and client information vulnerable.
The solution? The same as breaking personal habits: awareness, action, and consistency. If you don’t start tackling those bad security habits, they will only hold your business back.
